Using normal keyword searches can be helpful to find quick results in any search engine or database. But, many results will be irrelevant.

Add double inverted commas "..." around a phrase will search for the exact sequence of words in the exact order without searching for individual key words. This works across all databases and search engines and reduces your search results.

Truncation can extend your search out to ensure you're not missing out on any relevant records. Works with words with different endings. Go to last letter of word before ending changes and add *. Here's some examples:

Some database (CINAHL, Medline) will allow truncation inside a phrase also | "nurs* manag*" AND dementia |
For advanced searches using (.........) called a paretheses groups terms or Boolean operators together. It helps the database process your logic correctly and control the order of combinations in advanced searching. CINAHL and Medline automatically add parentheses around each line in an advanced search.

Search modes offer four different ways to conduct a search. You can combine a search mode with expanders, such as “Apply related words,” and filters such as “Full Text” or “Publication Type.”
Natural Language Search |
Search using everyday conversational language instead of keywords e.g. What are the signs and symptoms of sepsis? This can sometimes give improved results as AI can interpret the context and find synonyms for you. Can be user-friendly and helps if you're unsure of using boolean searching techniques. |
Proximity |
Searches for terms near to each other. E.g. mental health will automatically search as mental N5 health, which means “mental” and “health” separated by five words or less, in any order. A record will be returned only if all the words searched are found within the same field, such as title, subject, or abstract. Proximity doesn't across fields or subfields. This mode also supports Boolean searching when AND,OR, NOT are included between terms. |

In some databases you can use controlled language which is a standardised vocabulary which means one term will cover every synonym of that term in that database. The most common are MeSH Headings and CINAHL Headings.
