If you're a new student we strongly recommend you watch the IT and Library induction Moodle module. Access the induction and find links to lots of useful information on the myNapier Getting Started page - this is the first place you should go for answers to general library questions.
The induction module is available 24/7 throughout the year and you can access it as many times as you like.
Here you will find all you need to know about using the libraries, finding and borrowing books, and help with using electronic resources.
LibrarySearch
All the books you have access to, both print and electronic, are listed in LibrarySearch the library catalogue. You can search by title to find a specific book, or by keywords to find all books on a topic of your choice.
Reading lists for modules
These can be found on the Moodle page for each module, or you can search for a module from the reading list homepage. These are a good starting point for your reading, but you will also be expected to do independent searching to find more sources yourself. Ask the staff at the Library Help Desk or contact the Subject Librarian if you have problems with links to online materials or cannot find the item you require.
How do I borrow?
See our web pages on finding and borrowing books for more information and guidance on how to use LibrarySearch and manage your account.
Book not available?
Have a look at our guidance of what to do when a book is not currently available.
Edinburgh Napier library buys access to high quality databases, e-journals and e-books for university staff and students. You need to log into LibrarySearch on and off campus because if you are not logged in you will not see everything we have access to.
Databases & e-journals may ask you to login when you are on or off campus to prove you are a member of Edinburgh Napier. For direct access to the correct login pages & login advice, access databases and e-journals from LibrarySearch. When you are using a database, look for the name or logo of Edinburgh Napier University, usually at the top of the screen. If you don't see this, it's very likely that you are not logged in and therefore you will not get access to resources.
To login to most databases and e-journals use the same username and password you use to login to Edinburgh Napier computers, email and myNapier.
A very small number of databases may need you to use a separate username and password - you can get more information from our database and e-journals password list.
Referencing is an important skill at university that allows you to demonstrate the sources you have used to help you complete your assignments and acknowledge the work of others. If you include the work or ideas of others without referencing these, this is called plagiarism. Plagiarism is a form of academic misconduct, please see the university guidance on academic integrity for more information on how to avoid plagiarism.
In the School of Health and Social Care we use the APA 7th style of referencing and we have an APA 7th referencing guide, which you can use to help you format your references.
You may also want to consider using reference management software to organise and manage the sources you are using, and help input citations and references into your assignments. You can learn more about these tools on our Reference Management guide.
