Health and Social Care

Library subject guide for nursing, midwifery, AHPs, health and social care

Getting Started

If you're a new student, we strongly recommend you read through the Library's Getting Started page to find out about our three campus libraries, opening times, borrowing books, finding your reading lists, printing and photocopying, and more.

The Introduction to Computing and Library Services module on Moodle aims to give you the information you need to get started with Library and IT services when you first arrive at University. It is available 24/7 throughout the year and you can access it as many times as you like.

See Introducing our Libraries for more information on how to join our quick and friendly introduction sessions to the online and campus libraries.

The Library aims to:

  • Provide equal opportunity and access to services and collections
  • Take a positive and flexible approach to promoting the full integration of everyone into all aspects of our activities
  • Work with Student Wellbeing and Inclusion and other departments as required to identify the best way to meet students’ specific needs.
  • Be open and receptive to feedback and welcome comments on our service.

For information about accessing our physical libraries, inclusion services, alternative formats, specialist software, and more, please see our Accessibility and Inclusion web pages.

The Academic Skills Team at Edinburgh Napier University offer a range of workshops and one-to-one advice to help you to develop academic skills.  Support is offered in a variety of ways to suit your individual needs.

Library Search

Library Search is the library catalogue of all our resources (hard copy & online subscriptions) in one place. You can search for hard copy books to borrow from the library & access online resources including ebooks, journal articles etc.

Accessing Electronic Resources

Edinburgh Napier library has access to high quality databases, e-journals and e-books for university staff and students.

You need to log into LibrarySearch on and off campus because if you are not logged in you will not see everything we have access to.

Databases & e-journals may ask you to login when you are on or off campus to prove you are a member of Edinburgh Napier. For direct access to the correct login pages & login advice, access databases and e-journals from LibrarySearch.

When you are using a database, look for the name or logo of Edinburgh Napier University, usually at the top of the screen. If you don't see this, it's very likely that you are not logged in and therefore you will not get access e.g.

If necessary, login with your usual Edinburgh Napier username and password. A very small number of databases may need you to use a separate username and password - you can get more information from our database and e-journals password list.

Referencing

In the School of Health and Social Care we use the APA 7th style of referencing and we have an APA 7th referencing guide, which you can use to help you format your references.

Referencing is an important skill at university that allows you to demonstrate the sources you have used to help you complete your assignments and acknowledge the work of others. If you include the work or ideas of others without referencing these, this is called plagiarism. Plagiarism is a form of academic misconduct, please see the university guidance on academic integrity for more information on how to avoid plagiarism.

You may also want to consider using reference management software to organise and manage the sources you are using, and help input citations and references into your assignments. You can learn more about these tools on our Reference Management guide.
