Built Environment, Computing and Engineering: Academic Staff

Library Subject Guide for students in the School of Computing/School of Engineering & the Built Environment.

Information for Academic Staff

How do I join the library as a staff member?
You will be automatically registered with the Library once you are on HR Connect. Your Staff ID card is also your Library card. Please ask at any library desk if you need help.

I would be very pleased to show you the resources available at Edinburgh Napier - including LibrarySearch, individual databases, and the Edinburgh Napier Research Repository. Please email me to make an appointment.

We have lots of information about the library and our services for new staff members:

This guide contains lots of useful information - but here are 3 of the most frequently asked questions:
How do I request books to be purchased by the library?
When you complete a module descriptor you will be asked to fill out details about core & background readings. If you would like to request extra books for a module, wider reading or research, email me.

Please include:

  • Book details. e.g. Title, author, date of publication.
  • Approximate number of students.
  • Mode of delivery - Is the module run on campus or distance learning/overseas?
  • Core or background  - Will the book be a core item that students need to use often, or for background reading?

How do I create a reading list?

We have a whole guide dedicated to reading lists!

You can create lists yourself, or ask library staff to help you. All the details are in our guide. Just ask if you need help.

I'm involved in research - how can the library help?

Please see the Research pages in this guide for some background information. You will also find useful information via the library's general post-graduate research pages or staff research pages.

I'm also very happy to meet with you to discuss your research, offer advice on subject specific databases, planning a search, Open Access publishing  and other related topics.

Training and Support

We offer a range of training and support.

Details of workshops and drop ins can be found on our calendar of events:

I'm happy to run sessions for small groups of staff on specific topics. Previous examples include Leganto reading list support, introduction to Mendeley and using BoB to create playlists of TV programmes.

Please contact me to arrange one ot one or group training. I would also like to hear your ideas for future sessions.
