Referencing in APA 7th Style

How to reference legal sources

The APA 7th manual only gives American examples of legal documents, therefore we have interpreted this to produce the following guidance to cover the various UK & Scottish legal documents that you may use. It is important to note that if you search other websites for guidance, you may get a different result.  Please be consistent in how you cite and reference legal sources throughout your work.

This guide is for APA 7th style referencing only, Law Students will use a different system, (OSCOLA). You must check which referencing style you are expected to use on your course, if you are not sure please speak to your programme leader or supervisor.

There are a number of different types of House of Commons papers including command papers, green papers, white papers, briefing papers, library research papers, committee reports, bills, amendments, and standard notes.

A key element of the referencing of these sources is including a component that identifies the source type and any further relevant information such as reference numbers. You need to provide enough information to allow your reader to find the original source.

Most of the time the author is likely to be a specific government department, body, or committee, however the format for sources with individual authors is also given below. Command, White and Green papers are published by either His Majesty’s Stationery Office (HMSO) or by The Stationery Office (TSO).
